ASA Midwest Tour
Howie Lettow Memorial 150
Milwaukee Mile
by Jim Heiland

Hats off to  ASA Midwest Tour, Steve Einhaus and the entire crew for putting on a great show.  We at IMCA Old Timers Vintage Group are greatfull for the chance to be part of the event.

There were 24 vintage cars coming from 4 state to be part of the show.  There were quite a cross section of vintage cars, from a 1955 Chev on up.  There were several retired Winston Cup  and ARCA cars racing with us.  We were given 2 practice sessions Monday and Tuesday.   The schedule call for one vintage heat race and a vintage feature.  After talking to Einhaus, he gave us 2 six lap heats and a 20 lap feature.

With the amount of practice we had, it became pretty clear what the pecking order was.  Four drivers got together and made up the line up for the 2 heats.  Faster cars in one heat and less faster cars in the other.

First heat, Paul Dolphy #5 Ford lead 2 laps, Heiland #4 lead 4 laps.  At the checked flag, #4 won by a bumper, holding off a charge by Craig Olson #11 Ford, 3rd was Dolphy, followed by #88 Dan Navrestad, #16 Alan Kautz, #43 Ron Boutell, 54 Dave Scheiner.

The Faster car heat was very close with #5 Pat Heaney, Chevelle showing the way followed by #2 Gary Mitidiero, #28 Jerry Schnieder, #80 Bob Heine, #13 Ken Hutchins, #90 Dick Karth, and the rest of the field.  We were all so involved watching the heats and features, nobody wrote down the finishing order.  Before I forget, I want to thank Brian Dophy, Paul's brother for helping out with lining us up and getting to the track on time.

The feature was pretty much an inverted start.  Faster cars in the back, make them work for it.  There was a caution on about lap 10 when #43 blew his motor.  The rest of the race, the #2 #28, #88, #13, #11, #84, #81, #5 put on quite the show.  At the finish line it was Gary Mitidiero, Jerry Schneider, Dan Navrestad, Ken Hutchins, Craig Olson, Chuck King, Curt Daughters, Pat Heaney, Bob Heine, Dick Karth, Butch Mierendorf, Jim Heiland, Tim Pasley, Paul Dolphy, Alan Kautz and Ron Boutell. order of finish by numbers,

2, 28, 88, 13, 11, 11, 84, 81, 5 Chevelle, 80, 90, 12, 4, 27, 5 Ford, 16, 43

What a thrill to be on the Milwaukee Mile, there is so much history there.  The ASA Midwest Tour races were really good to.

Check out the story on their web page,  http://asamidwesttour.com

With the amount of drivers there, I was able to add to my autographs on the #4 Nova.  Rusty Wallace, Johnny Sauter and Jim Sauter kind enought to sign the car.
